One: Rehearse the story of redemption.
Two: Fight the tendency to drift.
Three: Match your words with works.
Four: Rest in the promises of Christ.

God is Good; Choose to Obey Him

God is Good.

  1. Defining grace.
  2. Covenant promises.
  3. Powerful deliverance.
  4. Divine protection.
  5. Bountiful provision.

Choose to Obey Him.

  1. Fear the Lord. Stand in awe of his capabilities, character, and favor.
  2. Serve the Lord. Whole-heartedly align with his purpose and plan.
  3. Put away the gods. Eliminate every threat to God-ward affections.

Conclusion: Based on what I think of God, I am making choices today.

The Cities of Refuge

What should we learn from the cities of refuge?

One: The value of human life.

  • The defendant and the victim
  • For the Israelite and the stranger
  • Since all are made in the image of God

Two: The weight of civil justice.

  • Murder and rash vengeance are wrong
  • Right to a fair trial
  • Agreement of the witnesses
  • One witness is insufficient
  • Consideration of intent

Three: The hope of eternal salvation.

  • The cities of refuge were a type
  • Christ is the anti-type (fulfillment)

The Inheritance

What should we learn from the inheritance chapters?

One: God keeps his promises.

Two: There is more to the story.

  • The promise of physical land was kept.
  • Abraham knew there was more to the promise.
  • Fulfillment is found in the gospel story of a redemption, a land, a rest, and an inheritance.

Three: God is enough for me.

  • Psalm 16:5-6, 11

Genocide or Justice?

  • God's character cannot be accused.
  • God's ways cannot be understood.
  • God's ownership cannot be disputed.

Two: God is holy, and man has sinned against him.

  • Man is ruined by sin and rebelling in sin
  • Sin is the reason for judgment, not ethnicity.

Three: God is just, and his judgment is right.

Four: God is merciful, and he saves sinners who believe.

Five: God is true, and a future, final judgment is coming.


Daniel 4:34-35 His dominion is an everlasting dominion, and his kingdom endures from generation to generation; all the inhabitants of the earth are accounted as nothing, and he does according to his will among the host of heaven and among the inhabitants of the earth; and none can stay his hand or say to him, "What have you done?"

One: In one sense, we can say that at times we face battles in life.
Two: In another sense, we must recognize that the entire Christian life is a battle.
Three: In either perspective, endurance is required.
Four: The great problem you are facing is not your greatest problem. Your greatest problem is a lack of faith.
Five: God is sovereign, giving victory and the means to accomplish it.
Six: Beware of dependence on helpful resources.
Seven: See obedience as a strategy of war.

  • The promise of his victory.

Two: He is strengthening your faith.

  • I fight for faith.

Four: He is accomplishing his will.

Five: He is displaying his glory.

Stone Pile One: The horror of sin

  • Sin is rebellion against a holy God.
  • Sin is believing a lie.
    • The lie of secrets.
    • The lie of satisfaction.
  • Sin is following the path of temptation.

Stone Pile Two: The hope of salvation

  • God is merciful to renew the old covenant.
  • God is merciful to establish the new covenant.
  • The Valley of trouble becomes a door of hope. This is the work of Jesus.

  • This helps us think of sanctification.
  • 1) God does it.
  • 2) God calls for our obedience.

For Those Inside the Walls: Join God's Army.

  • This helps us think of salvation.
  • 1) The certainty of judgment
  • 2) The hope of salvation
  • 3) A place of belonging

A Fresh Start

Event One: The Circumcision

  • A reproach removed
  • In faith, obey God.

Event Two: The Passover

  • A provision remembered
  • In remembrance, thank God.

Event Three: The Commander

  • A commander revealed
  • In submission, worship God.
  • The Commander's position demands our worship
  • The Commander's presence should stir our worship

Conclusion: The hope of a fresh start today rests in Christ

  • Our Circumcision — Colossians 2:11-15
  • Our Passover — 1 Corinthians 5:7
  • Our Commander — 2 Corinthians 2:14

What Exactly Are We Remembering?

Remember that...

  1. God is accomplishing his purpose of advancing his kingdom
    • "Advancing the kingdom" is the language of war.
    • The names change, but the story is the same.
  2. God is keeping his promise of leading you home.
    • The date marks both the leading out and the leading into.
    • The east border marks the reality of entering the Promised Land.
  3. God is gathering worshippers by displaying his glory.
    • Glory that is seen in his power.
    • Glory that results in our fear.
