Text: 1 Timothy 1:1-11
Stick to the truth...
- because God has revealed the truth to us
- because the sensational can crowd out the essential
- because love is not always an easy choice to make
- because our pride craves knowledge
- because legalism comes easy to us
- because of the Gospel of the Glory of God
Proverbs 3:11-12 My son, do not despise the Lord's discipline or be weary of his reproof, for the Lord reproves him who he loves, as a father the son in whom he delights.
For the Parents: Don't ignore the folly.
- Give truth
- In love
- Use the rod to demonstrate both
For the Parented: Don't ignore the truth.
- Hear truth
- In wisdom
- Use obedience to demonstrate both
- Sexual sin ignores the instruction of wisdom
- Sexual sin believes the lie of temptation's promise
- Sexual sin squanders the joy of God's Design
- Sexual sin fails to look beyond the immediate
- Sexual sin surrenders your honor
- God created good things for our pleasure
- As Creator, God defines the boundaries of pleasure
- With self-control we war against the idolatry of pleasure
- Earthly pleasures remind us of the perfect, eternal, undiminished pleasure of being with God in heaven
Listen as we learn what self-control is, what sanctification is, and who is responsible for self-control in sanctification.
We seek to avoid the pitfalls on either extreme, instead we look to the Bible as it lays out our role in the process.
Proverbs calls us to six actions:
- Knowing God
- Worshipping God
- Trusting God
- Enjoying God
- Loving truth
- Rejecting sin
